Northern Lights and Comfortable Nights
The opportunity to view Alaska’s spectacular northern lights draws thousands of visitors to the Great Land each winter. Most people schedule a single night of aurora chasing, crossing their fingers that the lights will make an appearance. But we like to advocate for multiple nights across a variety of venues, thus increasing the chances of aurora borealis success. That’s why Copper Whale Inn and our sister company, Salmon Berry Tours, have teamed up to offer a six-day, five-night all-inclusive experience called the Northern Lights Getaway.

Led by a local guide with expert knowledge of the aurora borealis and Alaska, this unforgettable journey provides views of the famous northern lights combined with an in-depth exploration of our state’s pristine wilderness and unique cultures. Throughout the expedition, guests embark on thrilling adventures under the vast Alaska skies, from exhilarating dog sled rides through snow-covered landscapes to tranquil hikes beneath the stars.
Sound like fun? Here’s the skinny:
Where you’ll go: Start the adventure in Anchorage with a stay at the Copper Whale Inn and dinner at the famous Glacier Brewhouse, just a few blocks from the inn. Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city and the center for commerce, government, and tourism, so visitors will be able to witness the 24/7 bustling of this vibrant community, even during the winter months.
On the second day, travelers head north along the George Parks Highway to the kennel of six-time Iditarod champion Dallas Seavey, where a sled dog ride through a wintry forest and puppy cuddles await. After, enjoy a trip to Denali Brewing Company in the little community of Talkeetna, where craft beer tastings and dinner await. Take in a presentation about the aurora borealis that evening before saying goodnight in a cozy Talkeetna lodging.
The following afternoon, board the historic Alaska Railroad Aurora Winter Train for a trip north to Fairbanks, known as the Golden Heart City. The last stop along the 470-mile railbelt that stretches from Seward north to Fairbanks. Escape the artificial city lights and search for the northern lights at an aurora viewing location outside of Fairbanks. Learn the history of the area, Alaska Native folklore, and personal stories of living in Alaska on this evening excursion into the wilderness.
Day four invites guests to warm up at the famous Chena Hot Springs Resort before chasing the northern lights that night. Visit the Aurora Ice Museum and relax in Chena Hot Springs’ soothing mineral water pools. Enjoy a late dinner before starting the search for light shows at a private aurora viewing location outside Fairbanks.
The final full day includes an exclusive evening with a professional photographer who knows all the tricks and tips for aurora borealis photography. Enjoy a casual Alaska barbecue dinner, then step out to view the northern lights one last time before flying home the following morning.
