Copper Whale Inn - A stay with style
The team at Copper Whale Inn is proud to provide clean, comfortable lodging in the heart of downtown Anchorage, but we’re more than a place to rest your head at the end of a busy day. From the beautiful gardens framing our property to unique room themes and local artwork, a stay at the Copper Whale is an immersive experience into what makes the Great Land special.
Located at the west end of downtown along L Street, the Copper Whale looks out over beautiful Cook Inlet, with the Alaska Range in the distance. Some of the inn’s rooms look out over Cook Inlet, and all rooms offer views of the surrounding mountains and our flowering gardens.
We’re just steps away from Anchorage activities as well, and guests wanting to stretch their legs on foot or by bike will find the popular Tony Knowles Coastal Trail just below the property.
The inn features five different room types, and each has its own distinct character. While we can’t guarantee a specific room (check them all out here), we can guarantee a stay filled with hospitality, comfort, and a bit of whimsy.

Queen Bed with Shared Bath
For guests looking for a great value and a high-quality stay, the inn offers two queen rooms with one shared bathroom. Both rooms overlook Cook Inlet and the Alaska Range, and both can accommodate a rollaway bed upon request for an additional charge. Called “Raven’s Roost” and “Eagle’s Nest,” these rooms share a bathroom just down the hall
What makes these rooms special: These rooms are perfect for families traveling together or those looking for a lower price point without sacrificing any of the famous Copper Whale luxury.
Queen Bed with Private Bath
Four Copper Whale Inn rooms are equipped with an ensuite bathroom and a queen-size bed, and each is charmingly decorated to match Anchorage’s maritime history and natural environments. One room, the “Speakeasy,” gives a nod to the Prohibition era, with 1920’s color palettes and decor. Another, dubbed the “Salmonberry,” has patio access and bright, colorful prints reminiscent of Southcentral Alaska’s vibrant natural landscapes. No matter which of the four rooms you choose, it’s sure to be a comfortable night’s sleep!
Note: There is no room for a rollaway bed in these rooms, but the cozy ambiance and decor make them perfect for one or two guests.
What makes these rooms special: The themed character features are a favorite among past guests, while the ensuite baths allow true privacy.
Queen + Twin with Bath
Traveling with a party of three? The Queen + Twin room type features the same comfortable bed as our other rooms, but also has a couch that converts into a twin-size bed. With four rooms featuring this configuration, it’s also a great option for larger family groups, as two of the rooms can also accommodate a rollaway for children (it’s a tight squeeze).
What makes these rooms special: The “Anchorage” room features the work of local artist Rhonda Scott, while the “Mermaid Grotto” offers sea-themed, mystical mermaid art.
King or Two Twin Conversion Rooms
The Copper Whale has one room with two twin-size beds that stay in that configuration. Called the “Bootlegger,” it’s a popular choice for friends traveling together or families with older kids. Also, three additional rooms with king-size beds can be converted to two twin beds, so everyone can be accommodated no matter their group dynamics!
What makes these rooms special: The “Garden” and “Whale Watch” rooms are king-to-twin accessible, and their beautiful furnishings make for peaceful slumber. The Garden room is decorated with Rhonda Scott artwork, while Whale Watch is appointed with a small refrigerator and microwave oven.
The Bicycle Suite: An apartment-style unit sleeping up to five
Needing even more room, or planning to stay for a while? A truly unique accommodation, the Bicycle Suite features one bedroom and a full kitchen. A couch folds into a queen bed, and a rollaway bed can be added for an additional charge, making it the perfect place for a family of five.
Enjoy the quirky bike-themed decor and direct access to the patio from the suite’s living room. Included is free wifi, a Roku television, a hair dryer, locally roasted coffee, and complimentary local bath products.
What makes the suite special: Anyone looking for a longer Anchorage stay will appreciate the convenience and style of the Bicycle Suite at Copper Whale Inn.
Also, in every Copper Whale Inn room, guests receive high-speed wifi, Roku TV, a hair dryer, locally-roasted coffee, and complimentary local bath products. We’re ready to welcome you to our little corner of Alaska’s largest city!
