Anchorage’s holiday season sparkles at Copper Whale Inn

Stay overnight in our cozy historic inn and discover the magic of an Alaska winter

Treat yourself to a truly special holiday experience with a night or two at the Copper Whale Inn. There’s nothing quite like the bright lights and fun events in Alaska’s largest city to lift the spirits and usher in another winter season.

The Copper Whale Inn is the perfect home base for holiday shopping, dining, and experiences that touch upon the uniqueness of Alaska. From seasonal specials at local restaurants to artisan art and craft shows and community activities for the whole family, Anchorage shines in November and December.

Why stay overnight? Our cozy inn is located just a few blocks from downtown Anchorage’s Performing Arts Center, so you won’t have to worry about driving home on slippery roads after a show. Have late dinner reservations? It’s so easy to stroll the festive streets back to the Copper Whale after a fine dining experience, and settle into our down comforters, soft lighting, and hot cocoa bar.

Need some inspiration? Here are a few of our favorite happenings in downtown Anchorage over the holiday season:

Crafted in Alaska Show, Thanksgiving weekend, Anchorage Museum

One of the best events for those looking to find handmade treasures from Alaska, the Crafted in Alaska show is curated for excellence, and we always find something special here. Browse through a wide selection of gift-giving options, from jewelry and textile art to pottery and printed designs at the museum's most popular holiday event. A bonus: You’ll be supporting Alaska’s thriving community of designers, artists, and creatives, with a portion of all proceeds going toward Anchorage Museum programs and exhibits. Museum members receive a 10% discount on all purchases, too.

The Nutcracker Ballet

There is perhaps nothing more “Christmas” for Anchorage families than dressing up over Thanksgiving weekend and traveling downtown for this annual Nutcracker ballet that features scores of local children in the performance. It’s colorful, fun, and a great way to introduce kids to the magic of dance. Many families make a weekend of it, spending the night downtown, shopping, attending the downtown tree lighting (see below), and having a special meal at one of the city’s restaurants. We love kids at the Copper Whale, so give us a call and we’ll set you up for a delightful kick off to the holidays (be sure to review our room configurations ahead of time, however, so you know what we offer and where).

Holiday Tree Lighting, Town Square Park, Saturday, Nov 29, 2025 at 6 p.m.

This is the “official” start to an Anchorage Christmas, with Santa and the reindeer making their way into Town Square for a rousing entrance filled with music, laughter, and lots of hot chocolate! The mayor lights up the big spruce tree, and several local performers get into the swing of Christmas with plenty of holiday-themed tunes.

Hotel Captain Cook Gingerbread Village

After the retirement of local gingerbread legend Joe Hickel, there was some question about the continuance of this beloved event at this luxury hotel along 5th Avenue. But never fear! The University of Alaska Anchorage Culinary Program students have taken up the mantle, and the village will be back in 2025. Typically, “construction” begins Thanksgiving weekend and is finished in time for Christmas Eve. Bring the whole family and take photos among the hotel’s other stunning holiday decorations.

Anchorage Museum

Each Friday throughout the year, the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center puts together a community-themed evening of fun. Between 6-9 p.m., admission is free, and there’s always some special music, family fun, and access to exhibits. Our suggestion? Check in to the Copper Whale early, browse the entire downtown area for the Anchorage Downtown Partnership’s First Friday events, https://map.ancfirstfriday.com/, then hit the Anchorage Museum as a topper on the evening.

Anchorage International Film Festival

Love movies of all genres and styles? Don’t miss out on the annual Anchorage International Film Festival’s citywide showings between December 5-14. With a tagline of “Films worth freezing for,” this amazing festival is a great way to support filmmakers from around the state and nation, and get to know some of the fun venues around Anchorage.

Ready to jump into another Alaska holiday season? Book your rooms today before they sell out! Located in the heart of downtown Anchorage’s vibrant urban scene, the inn property sits within easy walking distance of shopping, dining, and attractions, and also features spectacular views of Cook Inlet and the Alaska Range. We also have quick access to the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail for those looking for cross-country skiing, fat biking, or walking opportunities.
