Welcome to Anchorage’s Coziest Lodging

Skip the big hotels and experience the comfort and character of Copper Whale Inn’s historic property

It’s winter in Alaska, and the team at Copper Whale Inn is busy with last-minute holiday preparations in anticipation of this most delicious time of year. Our hot cocoa bar is full of sweets and treats, and every guest staying at our downtown Anchorage inn is treated to beautiful lights we’ve strung simply everywhere. It’s all part of the Copper Whale Whale Inn’s commitment to stellar service and warm, comfortable accommodations in the heart of Alaska’s largest city.

We know there are many choices for overnight stays in Anchorage, and it can be overwhelming to navigate the options, especially during the busier seasons. As 2026 creeps ever closer, many people are starting to think about their upcoming Alaska adventures, and we think the Copper Whale Inn is a perfect place to begin those preparations!

Why choose the Copper Whale Inn over a larger hotel? Let us count the ways:

Location, location, location

Perfectly situated in downtown Anchorage along L Street, the inn features some of the best Cook Inlet views the city has to offer. The Alaska Range looms large from our living room window, and every Copper Whale Inn room provides either a vantage point overlooking the inlet to the west or our lush gardens and the Chugach mountains to the east.

The inn’s location also benefits those who wish to explore downtown Anchorage and take advantage of the activities, shopping, and dining options available just steps from our front door. From breakfast at a local cafe to a stroll along the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, or a stop at one of the many art galleries in the downtown district, Copper Whale Inn is visitor central.

Anchorage history, lived

Built in 1939 by local physician Howard Romig, Copper Whale Inn’s main building served as a private residence, corporate office, and various other places of business unique to Alaska before being converted to a bed and breakfast in the 1980s. The West Building was constructed in 1996 to add seven additional rooms for a total of 15 to serve more guests at this quaint boutique hotel.

The Copper Whale Inn was purchased in 2019 by Candice McDonald, a lifelong resident of Alaska. The perfect complement to Candice’s already-flourishing tour business just five blocks away, pairing locally owned accommodations with high-quality Alaska experiences meant visitors to Alaska’s largest city were provided a seamless vacation, start to finish.

Attention to details, large and small

From the warm, seasonally decorated lobby and living room to the fun and uniquely themed guest rooms, the Copper Whale Inn throws out definite vibes of comfort, fun, and care. From the Eagle’s Nest Queen room to the Garden or Whale Watch King-to-Twin conversion rooms and the Mermaid Grotto, the charming decor will be as memorable as the stay itself. All rooms have free high-speed wifi, Roku TV, hair dryer, fresh coffee, and complimentary bath products. Sure, larger hotels have most of these amenities as well, but our coffee is roasted right here in Anchorage, and the bath products are locally sourced and as individual as each guest.

Need to store luggage? Locked storage is available for guests at a rate of $5 USD per bag, per day. This charge can either be paid in cash or added to the room charge, making it easy to explore other parts of Anchorage or Southcentral Alaska without hauling large or bulky bags.

Laundry facilities are also on-site for guests who need to do a bit of washing. Copper Whale Inn’s laundry room is available for guest use from 5-10 p.m. daily at a charge of $12 USD for a wash and dry. Soap is provided. Charges can be added to the room charge or via cash if guests have booked their stay through a tour operator.

European-style continental breakfast at the coziest lodging in Anchorage

Every morning, an expansive continental-style breakfast is included for all guests. During the summer months this buffet is available between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. In the winter, breakfast is served between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m., or may be presented as self-serve with no attendant during quieter times.

Copper Whale Inn is pleased to offer to serve locally-roasted coffee, a variety of teas, hot chocolate, juices, water, and milk. Breakfast items may include hard-boiled eggs, meats, cheeses, and delicious Alaska smoked salmon. Pastries and breads are also available to accompany the proteins, and cereals are on hand for those wishing a cold or hot version. Fresh seasonal fruit will also be on hand for a delicious topper.

Access to other Alaska experiences

A bright bonus to staying at Copper Whale Inn is the ease with which guests can book adventures in Anchorage and around Southcentral Alaska. Salmon Berry Tours is a sister company of the inn and provides door-to-door service for guests who’ve booked their activities. Want to mush behind a team of sled dogs? Trek on a glacier? Maybe a mountain tram ride or visit to a wildlife sanctuary is on the list of must-dos. Salmon Berry Tours offers unforgettable small-group tours that check all of the Alaska fun boxes.

And, unlike larger hotel properties where guests are just a room number, Copper Whale’s innkeepers are dedicated professionals who know each individual patron. The team prides itself on personalized service with a smile or recommendation for activities or dining; just ask. We can’t wait to welcome you!
