What about the volcano?

Regarding Mt. Spurr

You may have heard that there is a currently active volcano, Mt. Spurr, in South Central Alaska.

You do NOT need to cancel your trip!

However, we DO recommend "trip interruption" and "cancel for any reason" travel insurance. This volcano is about 80 air miles from Anchorage and does erupt periodically. The current warning level is at yellow (two steps from red), and we should have several days’ warning if an eruption becomes imminent. IF the volcano erupts during your trip to Alaska, you may experience falling ash, and the airport will likely be closed for about 24-48 hours.

We are consistently monitoring the situation. We understand this may feel like a scary situation, but based on historical eruptions, Anchorage is in no immediate danger. This is not going to be Dante’s Peak. Based on the past eruptions, we could have 3 hours before ash hits the Anchorage area. We have extra N95 masks available in our Salmon Berry Tours office. Feel free to stop by while you are in Anchorage to take some with you on your adventures.

We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance that covers trip interruption. Should you need to extend your stay in a location or modify your itinerary, we will assist in those changes and you will pay the difference in cost. We will provide a travel insurance letter that you can submit to cover the additional charges. We will adhere to our standard cancellation policy.
