Why stay at the Copper Whale Inn?

What travelers love most about our downtown Anchorage inn

After a rather inauspicious start, Anchorage’s snow situation has improved dramatically, making February a perfect time to plan that winter trip and include a stay at our cozy inn on L Street. What could be more delightful than sipping a cup of hot cocoa or tea and watching the snow tumble down outside, or bundling up and taking a walk or ski in our winter wonderland? With easy access to all the downtown attractions and personalized service for every guest, the Copper Whale Inn is Anchorage’s choice for a comfortable, snug retreat during the height of what many Alaskans say is the best time of winter.

We love hearing from our guests, and we’ve compiled a list of their favorite amenities and the reasons why people keep coming back to stay with us. Here are some of the most popular:

Why stay at Copper Whale Inn?

Because Copper Whale Inn is close to everything

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again (and again!). We really are close to everything downtown Anchorage offers, from restaurants to museums and transportation options. It’s easy to get from one place to another, thanks to our location on L. Street, between 4th and 5th Avenues. Know where to stay in Anchorage, and that’s right in the middle of the action at Copper Whale Inn. Check out our website for some suggestions for shopping, dining, and attractions within walking distance. Oh, and remember January’s post about winter events in Anchorage? Fur Rendezvous starts up February 26 and runs through March 8; the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Ceremonial Start begins.

We’re a piece of Anchorage history

Built in 1939 by local physician Howard Romig, the inn’s main building served as a private residence, corporate office, and various other places of business unique to Alaska before being converted to a bed and breakfast in the 1980s. The West Building was constructed in 1996 to add seven additional rooms for a total of 15 to serve more guests. Situated between Anchorage’s few high-rise offices, the inn is a quaint sanctuary amidst the busyness of Alaska’s largest city and is popular with business travelers.

Breakfast is served - every morning!

One of the most popular amenities of the Copper Whale Inn is our European-style continental breakfast. Set up in the common room and kitchen areas of the inn, our breakfast buffet is available between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m., and in the winter, is served between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. The kitchen is also outfitted with several self-serve coolers through which breakfast is offered when no attendant is present during quieter times. Fresh, hot coffee and tea are always available, and our wintertime hot cocoa bar has all kinds of accessories and whimsical mugs for a special chocolatey treat.

Copper Whale Inn rooms are comfortable, clean, and uniquely styled

All rooms have free high-speed wifi, Roku TV, hair dryer, locally-roasted coffee, and complimentary locally-made bath products. Some rooms have views of Cook Inlet and the Alaska Range to the west, made even more beautiful with a coating of snow. All rooms have views of the surrounding mountains and beautiful corner property. With a variety of configurations to suit every traveler’s style, the inn places your comfort at the heart of each stay. Choose from among private and shared baths, king-to-twin conversion rooms, or a full suite for a family or friend group. And when we say our rooms are uniquely styled, we mean in the themes of Anchorage: Raven’s Roost and Eagle’s Nest rooms are on the top floor with birds-eye views of downtown and the mountains beyond, the Salmonberry and Speakeasy rooms are a nod to local cuisine and a 1920s historical past (the secret knock is all up to you, however). The Whale Watch and Garden rooms are beautifully decorated with nautical art and the paintings of a local artist, respectively. We even have a Mermaid Grotto room and a Bicycle room! While the Copper Whale Inn can’t guarantee a particular room, we will do our best to match guests with the room fitting their needs.

We have our own tour company!

Well, it’s our sister tour company, but how convenient is that? Salmon Berry Tours, located along 4th Avenue, offers small-group adventures across Southcentral Alaska, year-round. Whether you want to chase the aurora borealis or ride behind a team of sled dogs, or hike on a glacier, Salmon Berry Tours provides tours for every age and budget, and they’ll pick you up right at the Copper Whale Inn front door. Popular winter tours include the Matanuska Glacier Adventure, Winter Dog Sledding, Turnagain Turn Tour, and the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Tour. Winter tour guests may also request the loan of cold-weather gear (when available), just in case what you brought isn’t quite warm enough.
